Nelson Mandela University (NMU) is committed to providing comprehensive library services to students enrolled in the Universal Accessibility and Disability Support (UADS) program. Our aim is to ensure that all students have equitable access to information and resources, regardless of their special needs or abilities.

 

Key Features:

Designated Computers: NMU library offers designated computers for UADS students, featuring a special keyboard with yellow keys for enhanced visibility. These computers are equipped with Zoomtext, JAWS, and OpenBook software to assist students with visual impairments in accessing digital content. Additionally, a magnifier is available to aid students in reading printed materials.

 

Assistive Technology Room:

At the Second Avenue Library, NMU offers an assistive technology room exclusively for special needs students. This new facility provides access to specialized computers and devices, along with a dedicated workspace tailored to their requirements. Located on the ground floor for easy access, the room ensures an inclusive environment where students can access resources and study comfortably. The assistive technology room also has a braille embosser for students to print articles in braille.

A portable magnifier with zoom in and out functions, high contrast display, and a camera button for capturing images.


Transformer HD

A portable video magnifier featuring Full HD 1080p camera, Wi-Fi capability, and compatibility with popular magnification software programs


Pearl Scanner: 

Provides instant portable access to printed material for blind and low vision users, with JAWS and OpenBook scanning and reading software.


     

   Acesight

A headset combining augmented reality and magnification to enhance visual clarity for users with low vision, offering magnification up to 16x and various contrast options.


Sensory PBRW:

A portable multimedia player, e-book reader, and voice recorder designed for visually impaired users, offering playback of digital talking books or textbooks and recording of lectures.

 

Braille Embosser:

A portable magnifier with zoom in and out functions, high contrast display, and a camera button for capturing images.
